Christian Women’s Job Corps

…of healthy stability for women facing the challenges of gaining and maintaining employment. Houston is an excellent city, offering outstanding employment and education opportunities to its residents. For many reasons, however, some of its most needy residents are unable to gain access to these opportunities.

Christian Women's Job Corps (CWJC) works to identify the barriers that women face in the quest to become self-sufficient. CWJC mentors and teachers help women access the community resources that will help them meet the educational, vocational, financial and spiritual needs of their families and support them in moving from dependency to self-sufficiency.

After completing an application and interview, each student is enrolled in a a 12-week training course to build skills needed for success in life, employment, and education. CWJC instructors are chosen because they are experts in the skills they teach. Each instructor has a strong history of serving the community in their area of instruction in their career or through volunteering.

The curriculum includes:
• Bible Study
• Personal Discovery
• Goal Setting
• Finances
• Resumés and Cover Letters
• Interview Skills
• Business Etiquette
• Computer Literacy

CWJC actively seeks to partner with area agencies to provide a comprehensive approach to meeting the students' needs. Computer literacy, food pantries, clothes closets, temporary housing, transportation, job seeking and job retention skills are some of the services provided by area agencies, churches and ministries.

In May 1997, Christian Women's Job Corps was recognized by the White House as a viable program for assisting women in the transition from welfare to work.

Christian Women's Job Corps was named one of the eighteen founders of the Vice President's Welfare to Work Coalition to Sustain Success.

Enrollment of students in CWJC is not limited by religious preference. CWJC is open to all women seeking the skills and encouragement needed to move from dependency to self-sufficiency.
