Rush Week

July 21–28, 2012 - Ozark Mountains

Rush Week is an exciting week full of camp fun and missions impact. All students in 7th–12th grade (as well as their friends) are welcome to join us as we head out to "make a difference." Students will choose from different tracks for the week depending on interest, skills and experience. Rush Week is a unique experience in which students stay in condos and cottages serving during the day and playing at night.

More Details

  • Lodging – students will stay in fully-furnished resort-style accommodations – condos for Middle School, log cabins for High School. Each condo or cabin will have an adult leader present.
  • Tracks – Beginning May 1st, students will be asked to choose from the following tracks: Service, Evangelism, Backyard Bible Clubs (VBS), Social Justice and Sports Camps (HS only). If you do not have previous missions experience, you will be asked to begin your Rush Week journey in the Social Justice track.
  • Ministry Sites – Rush Week will consist of about 5-7 ministry sites in which we will partner with a local church to do ministry. All tracks will be represented at each site. Sites will be in several different towns – all within 30 minutes of our lodging site.
  • Transportation – Students will travel in 15-passenger vans to and from Rush Week as well as on site. Vans offer a better alternative than buses during travel due to relational and financial factors (we get to know each other more and it cost a whole lot less!).
  • Worship – One of the most anticipated portions of Rush Week is our nightly worship time. This year's worship will take place in a very unique venue (more info coming soon). Worship will be led by Roger Cullins (along with a full band). Our speakers for the week will include Jerrell Altic, Doug Bischoff and other guests.
  • Fun Stuff – one of the unique aspects of Rush Week is the great combination of hard work, amazing worship and unbelievable fun. Many fun activities are being planned for Rush Week. You can expect to get wet, go fast and of course, dance at the hoe-down. We'll keep the details quiet for now – you couldn't handle it if you knew!

FAQS

  • Why did the price increase for Rush Week?

The short answer is because everything else is going up in price. From lodging to transportation to food – we are simply being charged more for what we get. This has translated into increased costs for RW as well. The increase is NOT related to our new location. The price would have increased no matter where we would have gone.

  • Why don’t we use buses to get to and from Rush Week?

Two reasons – cost and relationships. The additional cost of using buses for transportation to and from RW would be tremendous (over $100/person). And once we arrive on site, we will need 15-passenger vans to get around and do ministry. It simply is not cost-effective to use both. The greater reason is the tremendous relationship-building that happens when you travel 10+ hours in a van. Because you are surrounded by 9-10 people instead of 50, it’s easier to get to know others.

  • How was this year’s location chosen?

Each year, we as the HUB staff begin by asking for feedback from our adult leaders that participated in RW. With that information and our own evaluation we begin to ask the question, “Does God want us to return to this location?” This year, the answer was clearly no. We felt that God was leading us somewhere different. Not that ministry is complete in Pensacola – it never will be anywhere. Then, we begin to list cities and areas within 10-14 hours of Houston (with the help of the Missions Office) that might be able to provide ministry, lodging and other needs that a group of 350 people would have. From that list, we begin to pray. In fact, our staff took an entire month to pray individually before we even discussed where God would have us go. As we came back together, we all felt that God was leading us to the same place – so . . . that’s where we are going. You can expect the same procedure after this year’s RW.

  • Why aren’t 6th graders included in Rush Week when they can handle a summer camp?

Rush Week is a bit tougher than camp. Compared to 4-5 days at camp, RW involves 8 full days. We believe the emotional and physical demands of travel, ministry and the RW schedule are a lot to ask of 6th graders. Also, we want the opportunity to prepare 6th graders through the one-day mission projects. In the end, setting students up to succeed at RW is just a good idea.

  • Why do students return from RW with such excitement and intentionality in their walk with Christ?

We believe it is due to three aspects of RW – AWAY, WITH and OTHERS.

AWAY - Students are away from media and other influences which can become noise in the life of a believer. Each year, students comment on how clearly they can hear God speak at RW.

WITH – RW provides students the opportunity to replace that noise with worship and intentional focus on King Jesus. Students experience times alone with God and in corporate worship that propel them in their walk.

OTHERS – Because of the nature of RW as missions, students have lots of chances to think about, serve and invest in others. This is somewhat unique in the life of most adolescents who spend most of their time focusing on themselves. This “others first” mentality can have a tremendous impact on teenagers.

Rush Week Blog

Headed Home.

I can't believe how fast this has come up but RushWeek is drawing to a close!  Our students have completed their ministry, had the block parties, finished worship and had some time playing.  So tomorrow morning EARLY they will load up for the drive back to Houston.

Please thank God with us for his protection and blessing over this week and pray for a safe return for all our students and leaders.  Thanks so much for your support...

 Blessings,

Student Blog

The last few days have been fantastic!  We have seen God do some great things as we have started working with our ministry sites.  Our students have really enjoyed our evening worship times.  Jerrell Altic spoke on Monday and Tom Hufty (Zac's dad) spoke last night.

Before we left we asked one of our students to write something about RushWeek that we could post on here, so here is a message from Joy Lazarus (just completed 10th grade):

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” - John 15:13

Perfect love? How can that be? I often find myself marveling at our Lord's sovereign love. His is so true, authentic, and freely given; the polar opposite of my selfish tendencies. I love with my heart, while He loved with His Son. I'm praying that during Rushweek we will be able to love others like He has loved us. What greater way can we show Jesus' grace by being examples of His glory? I hope that during Rushweek, and for the rest of our lives, we will live for Him and not for ourselves. This week will be a stepping stone for new comers and believers to embrace and seek our Lord's perfection. I anticipate that the Holy Spirit will work in our hearts to rekindle our need for Christ. The Lord works in marvelous ways, and I have no doubt that He will change each of our lives.

“We love because he first loved us.” - 1 John 4:19

“But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope.” - Galatians 5:5...

Sunday Update

Today we had a great day worship, fun and food!

We started our day at Greater Little Rock Baptist Church in Pensacola.  The church made us feel especially welcome.  Their worship and youth choir did a great job of leading us in song and the Pastor brought the Word.

Later students had a snack and then had some evangelism training.  This was followed by a time of handing out flyers in the community to promote our ministry this week as well as our block parties.  After this the students went to Lamberts Cafe' which is the home of the 'Throwed Roll' (we'll let the students tell you more about that experience when they return).

Tonight we had our first worship in Perdido Bay Community Center.  Zach Dodd lead us in worship and Doug taught.  Our webcast was live and DID work!  We plan to have that on for each night of worship.

We've uploaded some pictures if you'd like to check them out under the photo tab.

Thanks for your support and prayers!!!

We're here!

Tonight all is well in Pensacola.  All 19 vans and our 2 luggage trucks arrived safely after the long drive from Houston to join our setup crew and purple team.  Students had some time to play on the beach when they got in.  After that it was on to getting settled in to lodging, eating lasagna and heading to the community center for orientation.

Our plan for tomorrow is to take everyone to Greater Little Rock Baptist Church.  This is a Church we will be partnering with for the rest of the week so we are excited to get to worship with them.

Later in the evening we will have our first official worship time.  If all our technical details work out we will be webcasting so please check that out!

Blessings.....    Harlie Raethel
