Ministering To Those With Special Needs

Thru the Roof is the Special Needs Ministry of Houston’s First Baptist Church. We believe it is all part of God’s plan to care, love and welcome children and adults with special needs into our church fellowship and community. Therefore, we consider it a privilege to offer Life Bible Study classes, buddies for children, a well trained staff of volunteers and caring individuals to make Sunday the best day of the week for your family member.

Life Bible Studies

We offer classes in:

The Bungalow (Rm 324) @ 9:15a & 10:45a for children with any special need
The Verandah (Rm 326) @ 10:45a for adults with special needs

Thru the Roof can help in areas of inclusion with your child by assigning them a buddy to help with inclusion in other areas in the church. This is addressed on an individual basis with the Special Needs Coordinator / Children’s Ministry Team.

Curriculum

LifeWay Special Buddies and Access are the teaching guides we use. We also bring in other sensory, motor and developmental tools to lead children and adults into a relationship with Jesus Christ. This is not babysitting. We believe in teaching the word of God and we are blessed with gifted teachers and volunteers who love serving in special needs ministry.

Security

First-time visitors to Thru the Roof will need to check in at the Third floor welcome desk and then make their way to the Special Needs Ministry Suite, parents/guardians will be assisted in filling out necessary paperwork to allow us to care for your family member to the best of our ability.
Should we need to contact you during Life Bible Study or Worship or any other time we are caring for your family member, we will text you. At pickup, family members must pick up in the Special Needs ministry suite unless other arrangements are in place.

Benefits to Children

The benefits to the children who come to church now will be that they have a place! They have a classroom designed specifically to meet the special needs that they may be dealing with whether it be Autism, Developmental Delays or any other disability. Thru the Roof also offers an option of having a special needs buddy, which will allow the child that can function better with their typical peers the opportunity to do so.

Benefits to Parents & Siblings

This ministry will allow parents the chance to breathe, to attend Life Bible Studies, worship services, or volunteer in opportunities throughout the church. It will give them freedom to serve and to fit into their church family. It will also give siblings who have brothers or sisters with disabilities the opportunity to know that "they love my brother here." It will become a natural part of life knowing that everyone is welcome. The First Kids Children's Ministry team has been instrumental in paving the way in a positive manner by realizing the needs of families and making this happen!
