Houston’s First’s Thru the Roof ministry is honored to host Night to Shine—an amazing evening filled with dancing,  karaoke, and so much joy! 

But more than the fun, this was a night where God’s love takes center stage. A night where every guest is celebrated, every volunteer is blessed, and Christ’s light shines the brightest.

Night to Shine is an unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God's love, for people with special needs ages 14 and older. On Friday, February 12, 2027, churches from all around the world will come together to host Night to Shine. Houston's First is excited to be a part of this effort! This is a night not only for guests to shine, but for churches, volunteers and—most importantly—for Christ to shine.

Interested in Serving?

There are a variety of roles where you can assist, whether you prefer to serve one on one as a buddy or to serve in a supporting role. We have a place for you! No prior experience with special needs friends is required. We strongly prefer volunteers 18 and older. Volunteers under 18 must be at least 14 and must be accompanied by a parent or adult volunteer for the entire event. Minimum age is 14, with no exceptions.

Volunteer Roles

There are two major categories of Night to Shine volunteers: Buddies and Support.

Buddies (One-on-one)

  • Work directly one-on-one with our guests of honor. A buddy will accompany and assist their assigned attendee throughout the evening.
  • The buddy will sit with their attendee during dinner and engage them in conversation and activities being offered.
  • Buddies will not assist with toileting.
  • Buddies must be at least 18 years old.

Support Roles

  • Carpool Check-In: Use iPads to assist attendees as they check in through the car-line drop-off.
  • Outside Efficiency Personnel: Oversee attendees and buddy volunteers connecting with each other before joining the party.
  • Inside Efficiency Personnel: Assist buddy volunteers check in and connect with guest of honor.
  • Parking Lot/Limo Rides: Assist with the check-in car line then move over to assist attendees sign up and ride the limo or party bus.
  • Crowns & Flowers: Crown our attendees and pin their corsage/boutonnière.
  • Hype Squad: Greet honored attendees like celebrities and VIPs; at the end of the night assist with party favor handouts.
  • Parent Usher: Escort attendee’s parents from the end of the red carpet celebration to the parent respite or church parking lot.
  • Karaoke: Encourage and assist attendees to choose a song and manage sign-up performance list. (EMCEE needed, contact staff.)
  • Bowling: Manage activity sign up and assist attendees with bowling ramps.
  • Dance Floor: Encourage and engage guests, maintaining a fun atmosphere on the dance floor and dancing.
  • Food: Assist guests as needed; ensure buddies are aware of guest food restrictions or direct them toward food, drinks, and snacks.

Volunteer Expectations

Thank you for your interest in being a Night to Shine volunteer! We want to make this an unforgettable prom night experience for our guests and ensure parents that their special guest is in a safe, secure, and friendly environment. Volunteers must meet or complete the following requirements by Jan 24 and be able to check in no later than 5p on Friday, Feb 12, 2027 @ The Loop Campus.

Requirements for ALL volunteers

  • Be at least 18 years old, 14 if volunteering with your family.
  • Pass a background check (18+).
  • Attend ONE of the training sessions below:
  • Sat, Jan 16, 2027 @ 9a — The Loop Campus (Chapel)
  • Sun, Jan 17, 2027 @ 2p — The Loop Campus (Chapel)

Volunteer BUDDIES must meet the above requirements PLUS:

  • Be a member of Houston's First or a like-minded church
  • Regularly attend a Bible believing church for at least 6 months
  • Complete Volunteer Application
  • Provide 3 references
  • Interview
  • Awareness Training

FAQ

Honored guests experience a red-carpet entrance, a catered dinner, dancing, karaoke, limousine rides, and a crowning ceremony where each guest is named a king or queen.

No, the event is free for all guests.

Formal Attire.

Note any special needs, such as sensory concerns, allergies, or dietary needs during registration. The event aims to be inclusive and accommodating.

Parents will not be allowed into the prom experience for safety and security reasons. Parents are encouraged to plan a self-care evening offsite or if you wish to stay onsite we will have small bites available in the main lobby of the church. Family members who are needing access to their loved one during the event, will need to email TTRE@HoustonsFirst.org to coordinate this and must pass a background check.

A prom attendee is able to bring their own buddy volunteer whether that's a family member or friend. However, this buddy volunteer will still need to meet all volunteer expectations and requirements.
