Deacons are called to be servant leaders — men who care for the body of Christ through presence, prayer, and practical help. At Houston’s First, we equip our deacons with the tools and training they need to serve with excellence. Whether providing care for widows, supporting church members in need, or walking through moments of crisis, deacons represent the heart of our church in action. Through pastoral support, clear processes, and biblically grounded expectations, we help each deacon live out their calling with confidence and purpose.
At Houston’s First, the office of deacon is a sacred calling rooted in Scripture. Each year, church members are invited to prayerfully nominate men who reflect the character qualities found in 1 Timothy 3:8–12—men who are spiritually mature, servant-hearted, and faithfully involved in the life of the church. Nominations may be submitted using an online form or a downloadable PDF, both designed to guide you through the process. Once received, each nomination is confidentially reviewed by the New Deacons Committee, which prayerfully discerns whether a nominee is ready and called to serve in this vital role. Please do not inform the candidate of your recommendation; the nominee will be contacted directly by the New Deacons Committee if and when it becomes appropriate. Serving as a deacon is not simply a title—it is an active ministry of care, support, and leadership within our church body.
Caring for widows is one of the most meaningful and foundational responsibilities entrusted to our deacons. Following the biblical model, each deacon is paired with one or more widows from our church family, providing consistent support, prayer, and encouragement. Through monthly check-ins, personal visits, and intentional communication, deacons help ensure that these women feel remembered, valued, and spiritually cared for. Our pastoral team provides orientation and resources to equip each deacon for this ministry, and ongoing support is available to help navigate the unique needs and challenges that may arise. Widow Care is not just a task—it’s a personal commitment to walk alongside someone with the heart of Christ.
Deacons serve as spiritual leaders who provide care, support, and encouragement to church members—especially widows—while upholding the character described in 1 Timothy 3.
You can submit a nomination using our online form or download the printable PDF. The New Deacons Committee prayerfully reviews each candidate and follows up as needed.
Yes. All new deacons and their spouses participate in orientation, and we provide tools and training to support them throughout their term of service.
