Meeting People Where They Are
2 Timothy 2:1-3 (CSB)
1 You, therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 3 Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
Christ’s Hope and Reconciliation Ministry (C.H.A.R.M.) is a ministry dedicated to meeting incarcerated individuals right where they are physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Though C.H.A.R.M. was officially founded in 2009, its vision was born years earlier in a prison cell, where God first planted the seeds of purpose in the heart of David Trickett.
In 1998, David was arrested for what would be the final time. Facing the reality of spending the next 50 years behind bars, he found himself at the end of his rope. But it was in that darkest moment that God met him. For the first time, David experienced a deep, unshakable peace and a joy that transcended his circumstances. Though everything around him said otherwise, he knew God had a plan.
In that encounter, David received a clear vision: the power of relationships and the call to meet others in their brokenness, just as God had met him in his. The mission was not to simply preach at those in prison, but to walk with them, offering love, support, and the hope of transformation through Jesus Christ.
C.H.A.R.M. was born from this calling. It is not a one-time outreach, but a long-term commitment to relationship and discipleship. This ministry walks with individuals not only during incarceration but also after their release. Doing so helps them reintegrate into society to continue growing in faith and purpose.
At its core, C.H.A.R.M. looks beyond the label of “criminal” and sees people, both men and women, made in the image of God. Each person has a past, but no past is beyond the reach of God’s grace. As seen in David’s own life, God can take what seems broken and hopeless and turn it into a testimony of healing, transformation, and redemption.
Through Christ, hearts can be restored. Minds can be renewed. Relationships can be mended. Futures can be rewritten.
