Every Family Has a Place
Church is meant to be a place where everyone feels welcomed, yet for many single parents and blended families, walking through the doors can come with an unexpected question:
"Do I really belong here?"
This feeling often has little to do with anyone saying the wrong thing. Instead, it comes from wondering if their family will look different from everyone else's, or if people will understand the story behind their circumstances.
For blended families, challenges may include helping children adjust to new relationships, learning to unite different parenting styles, and creating new family traditions together. For single parents, the daily realities often involve balancing work and parenting while navigating co-parenting relationships, sometimes with someone who does not attend church or share the same faith.
These practical realities are significant, but many say the emotional challenge is even greater.
Many single parents feel judged before anyone knows their story. Blended families sometimes feel defined by the word "blended" rather than by who they are as people. Assumptions can unintentionally create distance, leaving families wondering if they truly “fit” within the church community.
Yet, it is important to realize that every family has a story.
Until we take the time to truly listen, we cannot know what someone has walked through or the faithfulness they have demonstrated in the midst of difficult circumstances.
What if we viewed every person who walks through our doors as someone longing to be seen, known, and loved? That perspective has the power to change the way we welcome, serve, and care for one another.
Rather than asking how someone arrived here, perhaps the better question is how we can walk beside them now. Every person who enters the church is looking for the same thing: to know they are welcomed, valued, and loved.
That is the heart behind Houston's First Single Parents and Blended Families Ministry. We exist to create a welcoming, faith-filled community where people are fully known, deeply supported, and never have to walk alone. We know every family's story is different, but everyone deserves a place where they are understood, encouraged, and reminded that they are seen.
As a church, we can walk alongside these families, offering encouragement and hope for the future.
And by creating a community that reflects Christ's unconditional love, we have the opportunity to impact the future generation.
