Stay Rooted When Life Gets Flexible
As we enter the summer months, we should continually ask ourselves: How can I intentionally pursue God with the extra time I have been given?
For many people, summer brings a greater sense of freedom and flexibility. While this can be a gift, it can also become a distraction if we are not careful. It is easy to fill our schedules with activities, entertainment, and temporary pleasures that gradually pull our focus away from God.
To avoid spiritual drift, we must be intentional about cultivating spiritual consistency.
Spiritual consistency is built through simple, daily practices that keep us connected to Christ. This can be done by:
- Staying connected through prayer
- Staying connected to God's Word
- Staying connected to God's people
- Staying connected to God's mission
At first, these practices may seem difficult without the structure of a normal routine. On the other hand, the extra flexibility of summer can actually create more opportunities to grow in your faith.
One of the simplest ways to build spiritual consistency is to begin each day with prayer. Before reaching for your phone or diving into your schedule, take a few moments to thank God, seek His guidance, and commit your day to Him. Starting your day in prayer helps center your heart on Christ and reminds you of what matters most.
In addition to prayer, staying rooted in Scripture allows us to hear God's voice, grow in wisdom, and become better equipped to live out our faith. Even ten minutes a day can make a significant difference. Those ten minutes may eventually become fifteen, then twenty, then thirty, as your desire to spend time with God grows.
Whether you read during breakfast, listen to Scripture on a morning walk, or reflect on God's Word while getting ready for the day, there are countless ways to make time for Him. Small, consistent steps often lead to lasting spiritual growth.
Staying connected to God's people may look different during the summer, and that is okay. While weekly Bible studies or regular ministry schedules may pause, there are still many opportunities to encourage and invest in others.
Consider:
- Attending church regularly
- Inviting someone to coffee for a meaningful conversation
- Using social media to share encouragement and truth
- Reaching out to someone who may need support or prayer
When we intentionally pursue Christian community, we strengthen one another and demonstrate the love of Christ in practical ways.
Finally, remain connected to God's mission. Summer often provides extra time and flexibility that can be used to serve others. As followers of Christ, we are called to be His hands and feet wherever He has placed us.
You might:
- Help a neighbor with yard work or household tasks
- Serve on a Sunday morning as a PATHMAKER
- Look for opportunities to meet practical needs in your community
Serving others not only reflects the heart of Jesus, but it also allows others to experience His love through your actions.
This summer, do not simply fill your time. Instead, use this season as an opportunity to grow deeper in your relationship with God. Through consistent prayer, time in His Word, meaningful community, and faithful service, this summer can become one of the most spiritually fruitful seasons of your life.
Colossians 2:6-7 (CSB)
So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in Him, being rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing with gratitude.
