How God Uses Counseling to Transform Lives
Julianna Poor Memorial Counseling Center

Throughout Scripture, God never intended for His people to walk through life's hardest moments alone. From the earliest days of the Church, believers have encouraged one another, carried one another's burdens, prayed together, and offered wisdom and support during seasons of joy and hardship.

In Galatians 6:2, Paul writes, "Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Those words remind us that caring for one another is part of our calling as followers of Jesus.

That calling takes many forms.

- Sometimes it looks like a friend who faithfully listens.
- Sometimes it is a Life Bible Study class that rallies around a friend in need.
- Sometimes it is a pastor offering encouragement after a difficult diagnosis.
- And sometimes, it looks like a counselor.

The Julianna Poor Memorial Counseling Center is one way Houston's First lives out this commitment to care for people well. It exists because emotional and relational struggles are real, and no one should have to navigate them alone. Whether someone is grieving, facing anxiety, working through a difficult relationship, or simply seeking wisdom for the next season of life, the Counseling Center offers a place where individuals can be heard, encouraged, and cared for through both biblical truth and professional counseling.

Jesus consistently met people in their moments of need with compassion, truth, and hope. He saw people beyond their circumstances and invited them into healing, restoration, and a deeper relationship with God. As His Church, we are called to do the same.

That is why ministries like the Counseling Center matter. They are not separate from the mission of the Church; rather, they are an extension of it. These ministries remind us that caring for someone is one way we demonstrate the love of Christ to our church family and our community.

God often uses counseling as one of the many ways He brings healing, wisdom, and transformation. Through compassionate, Christ-centered care, people can experience renewed hope, gain healthier perspectives, strengthen relationships, and discover practical tools for navigating life's challenges. While counseling itself is not the source of transformation, God often works through the people He places around us, reminding us that hope grows in community and that no burden was ever meant to be carried alone.

That is the heart of the Counseling Center, and that is the heart of the Church.
